A HALF BAKED ATTEMPT

Jyothi Venkatesh

An adaptation of the classic, The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, Redrum - A Tale of Murder is the morbid tale of Daksh (played by Vibhav Roy), a disturbed man who goes on to become a singing sensation. But after receiving all the adulations and becoming famous, his inner insecurities and complexities get the better of him, which eventually leads to his downfall. Daksh Sikka gets into a whirlwind romance with city-based Aarika (Saaeda Imtiaz). But, before their love can blossom, Daksh has to fight his own demons and silence his inner turmoil.

A diligent narcotics officer Eric Fernandez (Tom Alter) who catches drug Mafia, is on the trail of Daksh. A junkie and slave to his fluctuating temper, Daksh fails to bury his torturous past and make something substantial out of his present rudderless life. Needless to say, Aarika eventually discovers his malicious ways and tries to steer clear of him, but what ensues is absolute madness.

There are way too many sub-plots and underlying themes in this aimless film, none of which have been explored well and they make no contribution to moving the story forward. Apart from Tom Alter, no one else on the cast deserves any praise. The less said about the brooding dim lit cinematography.

Vibhav Roy is sincere but fails to make an impression, with his dead pan looks, sans emotions. The Pakistani actress Saeeda Imtiaz and Neha Kargeti as Aarika's friend Chavi are merely passable While the premise of the tale is promising, unfortunately, the writing is lethargic and mediocre and lacks not only pace but also energy. The narrative drags while it meanders sketchily to establish the romance juxtaposed by Daksh's childhood history and the plot only makes a feeble attempt to skim through Daksh's life and hence ends up being a half-baked attempt.
