Kangana Ranaut moves the Bombay High Court to stop the defamation case filed by Javed Akhtar...

Actress Kangana Ranaut has approached the Bombay High Court to quash the defamation case filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar. It is known that this allegation dispute between Kangana and Javed Akhtar is 8 years old. Now that it is being said that Kangana is preparing to contest the elections, she does not want any case against her to be pending in the court. This case is for hearing in the division bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Manjusha Deshpande.

How the matter started?

Akhtar had filed a complaint against Ranaut, objecting to some comments made by her in an interview aired on Republic TV. The comments made by Ranaut were about a 2016 meeting between her and Akhtar. Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut had also filed a cross-complaint against Akhtar, alleging criminal conspiracy, extortion, and invasion of her privacy.

Extortion charges against Javed Akhtar

On July 24, 2023, a magistrate court in Andheri dropped extortion charges against Akhtar, but he was summoned to appear before the court in connection with the offense under sections 506 and 509 of the IPC. Akhtar appeared before the session in Dindoshi. A revision was filed before the Court challenging the summoning order.

How much more time will it take?

The sessions judge had stayed the order and the criminal proceedings arising from Kangana Ranaut's complaint until the final hearing on Akhtar's revision application.

Kangana has now approached the High Court seeking a stay on the case arising from Akhtar's complaint, filed through advocate Jai Bhardwaj.

According to her petition, both her complaint and Akhtar's complaint stem from the same incident, and hence their trial should be together to avoid conflicting judgments.

According to her petition, the proceedings arising out of her complaint have been stopped while the proceedings arising out of Akhtar's complaint are continuing and this is unjust and against the established principles of natural justice.

What did the advocate say?

The petition, filed through an advocate, said, "It is Ranaut's case which will bring out the truth of the dispute and not Akhtar's. It would be in the interest of justice that till the time the revision application is decided, Akhtar the case should also be put on hold." Rizwan Siddiqui has underlined that it remains to be seen what decision the court gives. However, now Kangana wants this matter to end quickly.
