Gulzar to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Guru Nanak Dev University

Guru Nanak Dev University has selected several great personalities to confer prestigious honorary degrees this year, including renowned Bollywood writer Gulzar (Sampoorna Singh Kalra). Banwari Lal Purohit, Vice Chancellor of the University and Governor of Punjab, will felicitate him during the 49th annual convocation of the University.

Gulzar, who has established his unique identity at the national and international level, needs no introduction. Recognizing his invaluable contribution to his field, the Syndicate and Senate members of the University, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu decided to honor Gulzar.

Gulzar to be Honored by University for Remarkable Contributions

Born on 18 August 1934 in the village Dina of Jehlum (Pakistan) to father Makhan Singh Kalra and mother Sujan Kaur, Sampooran Singh Kalra came to India after partition and became Gulzar, who not only kept his voice alive but also made people's lives alive with his words! His studies and writing took him to Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Hemant Kumar and his artistic ideas gained wings. Due to the magic of his words, Gulzar is known as a lyricist, story writer, director, producer, and writer.

Gulzar started his film career in 1963 by writing songs for the film "Bandhini". His songs started a new chapter in the Hindi cinema world. He also directed films like "Aandhi", "Mausam" and "Mirza Ghalib", where he also got success.

Apart from writing mainly in Urdu and Punjabi, Gulzar has also written literary works in Marwari, Bhojpuri, and other languages. His other books include "Chauras Raat" (short stories), "Raavi Paar" (story collection), "Raat Chand Aur Main" and "Kharashe".

Keeping in mind his contribution to the world of cinema, he has been honored with 7 National Film Awards, 22 Filmfare Awards, an Academy Award, and a Grammy Award. He was given the Sahitya Academy Award in 2002, Padma Bhushan in 2004, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013 as the best lyricist for writing songs in more than 40 films. He has also received the Best Lyricist Award 9 times. Apart from this, he has also been honored with the prestigious Jnanpith Award.

Gulzar has worked for social goodwill and the transformative power of education. He has contributed to "Aman ki Asha Shanti" movements in collaboration with NGOs like Eklavya Foundation and Aarushi.

The honoring of Gulzar by Guru Nanak Dev University is in recognition of his literary and intellectual contributions.
